The Record of You is one book for every birthday, from the day they arrive to the year they turn eighteen. Four pages each year hold their changing answers, your view of them, the people who came, and a letter they will read later.
The questions grow up with the child. In the early years you write what you notice. From five, you write down their answers exactly as they say them. From ten, you answer side by side: "You said / We noticed." From fourteen, they write, and you add a short note.
Every year also keeps a photograph, numbered lines for the guests in their own handwriting, and a note on what was happening out in the world. It begins with the story before them. It ends with pages that read the whole childhood back: three words and one sentence for each year.
Short on time? Each year marks five sections. Do those, add the photo, and the year is kept.
